The Mitsubishi Fuso factory in Portugal, located in Tramagal (Abrantes) and the production center for Europe, was chosen to produce the new model of the Fuso Canter truck, announced Daimler Trucks, and the multinational said that the production of the new vehicle started on December 2nd.

“The start of production is a proud moment for all of us here at FUSO’s European plant in Tramagal. Since 1980, we have produced almost 240,000 FUSO trucks. Now the new FUSO Canter joins this legacy, fulfilling the quality standards of FUSO and Daimler Truck”, said Jorge Rosa, President and CEO of Mitsubishi FUSO Truck Europe (MFTE), quoted in the Daimler Trucks press release.

The Director of Sales, Marketing and Customer Service at FUSO Europe, quoted in the note, states that “the FUSO Canter has been an international best seller in the light truck segment for many decades due to its class-leading turning diameter. payload and great versatility”, noting that “since it was launched on the market in 1963, more than 4.5 million FUSO Canters have been produced worldwide”.

“With this start of production, marked today, we want to offer our European customers an upgrade in safety, comfort and a new modern cabin design,” added Philipp Panter, in the information note dated December 2nd.

The FUSO Canter, made in Tramagal, was developed in Japan and has components from more than 90 European suppliers, such as the engine, axle components, shock absorbers, brakes, tires, lamps and headlights, as well as the seats and interior panels.

From Japan arrive parts for the cabin, or the steering wheel, the heating and air conditioning system, as well as the innovative Duonic transmission.

150 km from Lisbon, the Tramagal factory also produces the electric sister of FUSO Canter, FUSO eCanter. FUSO’s factory in Portugal, located in Tramagal and the production center for Europe, announced in June this year that it will reach carbon neutrality in truck production in 2022.

In 2019, Daimler Truck AG, the group to which the FUSO brand belongs, announced that all its European production infrastructure would become CO₂ neutral by 2022. In line with this goal, the Tramagal plant adopted environmentally friendly production by reducing energy consumption, providing green energy and locally producing energy through solar panels.

On the occasion, Jorge Rosa, director of the FUSO plant in Tramagal, said that “CO₂ neutral mobility can only be achieved if vehicle production is also green. At Tramagal, our commitment starts right from the way they are produced. Carbon neutral production leaves a smaller footprint and we want to be pioneers in the decarbonization process, both in product and production.”

Tramagal has been producing the 100% electric FUSO eCanter truck since 2017. “Sustainability is part of our strategy and it is something we believe in. Our future is electric, carbon neutral and based on renewable energies”, stressed the manager.
